680. Rabi al-Abrar, reporting:

“Ziyad ibn Abih asked Abu al-Aswad about the love of Ali, he said:

Indeed, the love of Ali increases in my heart in strength

like the love of Muawiyah increases in your heart.

For indeed I desire God and the abode of the Hereafter through my love of Ali

and you desire the world with its ornaments through your love of Muawiyah.

The like of me and you are similar to what the brothers of Madhhij said:

Two friends with different affairs         I want greatness and he desires Yemen

I love the blood of The Banu Malik     And he is [pleased] with the whiteness of milk”

“He would adhere to three things and abandon three,

he would adhere to (capturing) the hearts of men when he spoke,

listening attentively when he was spoken to

and choosing the easiest of things if he was contradicted.

He would abandon quarelling‚

association with the mean people

and that which we all apologise for.”

He said: He has three qualities;

“When Zayd ibn Sawhan – the mercy of God be upon him - was knocked down on the day of the Camel‚

the Commander of the Faithful came and sat at his head side and said:

‘May God have mercy on you, O Zayd,

You were light in provisions but strong in your assistance.’

Zayd raised his head towards him and said:

‘May God reward you, O Commander of the Faithful,

by God I have not known you except that you were knowledgeable about God,

in the Mother of Books you are elevated and wise

and that God is supreme in your heart.

By God, I have not fought with you on the basis of ignorance

but I have heard Umm Salama, the wife of the Prophet (SA) say:

I have heard the Messenger of God (SA) say:

‘Whosoever has adopted me as his master, Ali now is his master.

O God! Befriend those who befriend him,

discard those who show hostility to him,

and abandon those who forsake him. ’

he was of those who command the truth,

and forgive the people.’

He said: ‘What do you say about Uthman?’

He said: ‘He was the first to open the doors of oppression

and close the doors of truth.’

Muawiyah said: ‘You have killed yourself.’

He said: ‘Rather, I have killed you.’

There was no one of his tribesmen in the valley to intercede for him.

“Then Malik ibn al-Harith al-Ashtar stood up and said:

“O People! This is the executor of the executors,

the heir of the knowledge of the prophets,

who has undergone great tests

and immense forbearance.

The Book of God testifies to his faith and His Messenger to his residence in Heaven.

All virtues have been combined in him.

No one of the former or later generations have doubted his precedence, knowledge and virtue.”
