662. Tarikh Baghdad, reporting from Ibrahim, from ‘Alqama and al-Aswad, who said:

“We came to Abu Ayyub al-Ansari when he was departing from Siffin and said to him:

‘O Abu Ayyub, God honoured you by Muhammad alighting upon you

and his camel kneeling down at your door to the exclusion of the people, as a sign of honour to you.

However, you carried your sword striking therewith the people of divine Unity?’

He said: ‘O you! The pathfinder never lies to his people.

Indeed, the Messenger of God (SA) commanded us to fight three groups of people with Ali:

the Breakers, the Unjust and the Renegades.

As for the Breaker, we have encountered them, that is, the People of the Camel, Talha and Zubayr.

As for the Unjust, we have returned from [fighting] them, that is Muawiyah and Amr.

The Renegades, however, are the people on the margins or rivers,

the people of palms,

the people of date palms

and the people of rivers.

By God I do not know where they are,

but we have to fight them by the will of God.’

He said: I heard the Messenger of God (SA) say to Ammar:

O Ammar, the oppressive group will kill you,

when you will be with the Truth and the Truth will be with you.

O Ammar ibn Yasir,

if you see Ali indeed pursue a path and the rest of the people pursue another path,

then pursue the path of Ali,

for indeed he will never lead to your ruin,

nor will he remove you from guidance.

O Ammar, whoever girds himself with a sword and assists Ali against his enemies,

God will adorn him on the Day of Judgment with two scarves of pearls,

and whoever girds himself with a sword and assists the enemies of Ali against him,

God will adorn him on the Day of Judgment with two scarves of fire.’

We said: ‘O this, it is sufficient, may God have mercy on you;

it is sufficient, may God have mercy on you.’ ”

I [notice a hint of sarcasm in your voice and] see that you are implying something else.
