أ ـ التَّجهيزُ وَالدَّفنُ
The Funeral
544. الإرشاد عن حبّان بن عليّ العنزي عن مولىً لعليّ عليه السلام :
544. Al-Irshad, reporting from Hibban ibn Ali al-Anzi from the retainer of Ali, who said:
لَمّا حَضَرَت أميرَ المُؤمِنينَ عليه السلام الوَفاةُ قالَ لِلحَسَنِ وَالحُسَينِ عليهماالسلام :
“When the Commander of the Faithful was dying, he said to al-Hasan and al-Husain (AS):
إذا أنَا مُتُّ فَاحمِلاني عَلى سَريري ،
‘When I die, [both of you] put me on my bier.
ثُمَّ أخرِجاني وَاحمِلا مُؤَخَّرَ السَّريرِ ؛
Then take me out and carry the back of the bier.
فَإِنَّكُما تُكفيانِ مُقَدَّمَهُ ،
You two will protect the front of it.
ثُمَّ ائتِيا بِيَ الغَرِيَّينِ (الغريّان : طِربالان وهما بناءان كالصومعتين بظاهر الكوفة ، قرب قبر عليّ بن أبي طالب، معجم البلدان : ج4 ص196) .؛
Then bring me to al-Ghariyyayn. [Al-Ghariyyayn: Two huge buildings like monasteries on the outskirts of Kufah. Refer: Mu‘jam al-Buldan, vol. 4, p. 196. ]
فَإِنَّكُما سَتَرَيانِ صَخرَةً بَيضاءَ تَلمَعُ نورا ،
You will see a white rock shining with light.
فَاحتَفِرا فيها ؛
Dig there,
فَإِنَّكُما تَجِدانِ فيها ساجَةً ،
and you will find a teak board,
فَادفِناني فيها .
so bury me by it.’ ”
قالَ : فَلَمّا ماتَ أخرَجناهُ
He said: When he died, we took him out
وجَعَلنا نَحمِلُ مُؤَخَّرَ السَّريرِ ونُكفى مُقَدَّمَهُ ،
and began to carry the back of the bier, while we guarded the front of it.
وجَعَلنا نَسمَعُ دَويّا وحَفيفا حَتّى أتَينَا الغَرِيَّينِ ،
We began to hear humming and rustling until we came to al-Ghariyyayn.
فَإِذا صَخرَةٌ بَيضاءَ تَلمَع نورا ،
Behold! There was a white rock beaming with light.
فَاحتَفَرنا فَإِذا ساجَةٌ مَكتوبٌ عَلَيها :
We dug there and beheld, there was a shield on which was written:
«مِمَّا ادَّخَرَ نوحٌ لِعَلِيِّ بنِ أبي طالِبٍ» .
‘This is one of the things which Noah had preserved for Ali ibn Abi Talib.’
فَدَفَنّاهُ فيها ، وَانصَرَفنا
We buried him there and left.
ونَحنُ مَسرورونَ بِإِكرامِ اللّهِ لِأَميرِ المُؤمِنينَ عليه السلام ،
We were happy at God’s mark of honour to the Commander of the Faithful (AS).
فَلَحِقَنا قَومٌ مِنَ الشّيعَةِ لَم يَشهَدوا الصَّلاةَ عَلَيهِ ،
A group of the Shi‘a, who had not witnessed the prayer, followed us.
فَأَخبَرناهُم بِما جَرى وبِإِكرامِ اللّهِ أميرَ المُؤمِنينَ عليه السلام
We informed them about what had happened and about God’s mark of honour to the Commander of the Faithful (AS).
فَقالوا : نُحِبُّ أن نُعايِنَ مِن أمرِهِ ما عايَنتُم .
They said: ‘We would like to see what you have seen of his affair.’
فَقُلنا لَهُم :
We said to them:
إنَّ المَوضِعَ قَد عُفِّيَ أثَرُهُ بِوَصِيَّةٍ مِنهُ عليه السلام ،
‘Traces of the place have been removed according to his will.’
فَمَضَوا وعادوا إلَينا فَقالوا : إنَّهُمُ احتَفَروا فَلَم يَجِدوا شَيئا .
They kept coming back and forth to us and and they told us that they had dug but could not find anything.”

ب ـ خُطبَةُ الإِمامِ الحَسَنِ عليه السلام بَعدَ أبيهِ
Imam Hasan’s Sermon after His Father’s Martyrdom
545. تاريخ الطبري عن خالد بن جابر :
545. Tarikh al-Tabari, reporting from Khalid ibn Jabir who said:
سَمِعتُ الحَسَنَ يَقولُ ـ لَمّا قُتِلَ عَلِيٌّ عليه السلام وقَد قامَ خَطيبا ، فَقالَ ـ :
“I heard Hasan, when Ali was killed, having stood and delivered a sermon, say:
لَقَد قَتَلتُمُ اللَّيلَةَ رَجُلاً في لَيلَةٍ فيها نَزَلَ القُرآنُ ،
You have killed a man on the night the Quran was revealed,
وفيها رُفِعَ عيسَى بنُ مَريَمَ عليه السلام ،
Jesus the son of Mary (AS) was raised
وفيها قُتِلَ يوشَعُ بنُ نونٍ فَتى موسى عليهم االسلام .
and Yusha‘ ibn Nun, the youth of Musa (AS), was killed.
وَاللّهِ ما سَبَقَهُ أحَدٌ كانَ قَبلَهُ ،
By God, nobody before him has preceded him,
ولا يُدرِكُهُ أحَدٌ يَكونُ بَعدَهُ ،
nor will anybody after him reach him.
وَاللّهِ إن كانَ رَسولُ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله لَيَبعَثُهُ فِي السَّرِيَّةِ وجَبريلُ عَن يَمينِهِ وميكائيلُ عَن يَسارِهِ ،
By God, the Messenger of God would send him to battle with Gabriel on his right and Michael on his left.
وَاللّهِ ما تَرَكَ صَفراءَ ولا بَيضاءَ إلّا ثَمانُمِئَةٍ ـ أو سَبعُمِئَةٍ ـ أرصَدَها لِخادِمِهِ .
By God, he did not leave any Dinars or Dirhams except eight hundred – or seven hundred – that he kept in store for his servant.”

546. تهذيب الأحكام عن أبي مطر :
546. Tahdhib al-Ahkam, reporting from Abu Matar, who said:
لَمّا ضَرَبَ ابنُ مُلجَمٍ الفاسِقُ ـ لَعَنَهُ اللّهُ ـ أميرَ المُؤمِنينَ عليه السلام
“When Ibn Muljam, the wicked, struck the Commander of the Faithful (AS),
قالَ لَهُ الحَسَنُ عليه السلام :
Hasan said to him:
أقتُلُهُ ؟
‘Shall I kill him?’
قالَ : لا ، ولكِنِ احبِسهُ ؛
He said: ‘No, but detain him;
فَإِذا مُتُّ فَاقتُلوهُ ،
if I die, kill him.
وإذا مُتُّ فَادفِنوني في هذَا الظَّهرِ في قَبرِ أخَوَيَّ هودٍ وصالِحٍ عليهم االسلام .
When I die, bury me behind this, by the grave of my two brothers Hud and Salih (AS).’ ”

د ـ مَكانُ قَبرِ الإِمامِ عليه السلام
The Gravesite of the Imam
547. الإمام الصادق عليه السلام :
547. Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said:
كانَ أميرُ المُؤمِنينَ عَلِيٌّ يَأتِي النَّجَفَ ويَقولُ :
“The Commander of the Faithful Ali would come to Najaf and say:
وادِي السَّلامِ ومَجمَعُ أرواحِ المُؤمِنينَ
‘The valley of peace, the junction of the spirits of the believers!
ونِعمَ المَضجَعُ لِلمُؤمِنِ هذَا المَكانُ .
An excellent abode for the believer is this place!’
وكانَ يَقولُ : اللّهُمَّ اجعَل قَبري بِها .
He would say: ‘O God, make my grave in it.’ ”

548. تهذيب الأحكام عن أبي بصير :
548. Tahdhib al-Ahkam, reporting from Abu Basir, who said:
قُلتُ لِأَبي عَبدِ اللّهِ عليه السلام :
“I said to Abu ’Abdillah (AS):
أينَ دُفِنَ أميرُ المُؤمِنينَ عليه السلام
‘Where was the Commander of the Faithful buried?’
قالَ : دُفِنَ في قَبرِ أبيهِ نوحٍ عليه السلام
He said: ‘He was buried in the grave of his father Nuh (AS).’
قُلتُ : وأينَ قَبرُ نوحٍ ؟
I said: Where is the grave of Nuh?
النّاسُ يَقولونَ : إنَّهُ فِي المَسجِدِ ،
The people say: Indeed, it is in the Mosque.
قالَ : لا ، ذاكَ في ظَهرِ الكوفَةِ .
He said: ‘No, it is on the outskirts of Kufah.’ ”

ه ـ إخفاءُ قَبرِ الإِمامِ عليه السلام
Concealing the Grave of the Imam (AS)
549. الإمام الصادق عليه السلام :
549. Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said:
إنَّ أميرَ المُؤمِنينَ عليه السلام أمَرَ ابنَهُ الحَسَنَ أن يَحفِرَ لَهُ أربَعَةَ قُبورٍ في أربَعَةِ مَواضِعَ :
“The Commander of the Faithful (AS) commanded his son Hasan to dig four graves for him at four places:
فِي المَسجِدِ ،
in the mosque,
وفِي الرُّحبَةِ ،
in the courtyard,
وفِي الغَرِيِّ ،
at al-Ghariyy
وفي دارِ جَعدَةَ بنِ هُبَيرَةَ ،
and inside the house of Ja‘da Ibn Hubayra.
وإنَّما أرادَ بِهذا أن لا يَعلَمَ أحَدٌ مِن أعدائِهِ مَوضِعَ قَبرِهِ عليه السلام .
He meant thereby that no one of his enemies should know his gravesite.”

Emergence of the Grave of the Imam (AS)
550. كتاب من لا يحضره الفقيه عن صفوان عن الإمام الصادق عليه السلام :
550. Kitab Man la-Yahduruh al-Faqih, reporting from Safwan, from Imam al-Sadiq (AS), who said:
سارَ وأنَا مَعَهُ فِي القادِسِيَّةِ
“I accompanied him when he travelled through al-Qadisiyya
حَتّى أشرَفَ عَلَى النَّجَفِ . . .
until he overlooked Najaf . . .
ثُمَّ قالَ عليه السلام : اِعدِلِ بِنا ،
he said: ‘Turn around’.
قالَ : فَعَدَلتُ بِهِ فَلَم يَزَل سائِرا حَتّى أتَى الغَرِيَّ ،
I turned, and he continued until he arrived at al-Ghariyy.
فَوَقَفَ عَلَى القَبرِ فَساقَ السَّلامَ مِن آدَمَ عَلى نَبِيٍّ نَبِيٍّ عليهم السلام
He stood at the grave and he called down salutations unto every prophet (AS) beginning with Adam.
وأنَا أسوقُ السَّلامَ مَعَهُ حَتّى وَصَلَ السَّلامُ إلَى النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه و آله ،
I called down salutations with him until we reached salutations on the Prophet (SA),
ثُمَّ خَرَّ عَلَى القَبرِ فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيهِ وعَلا نَحيبَهُ ،
then he fell onto the grave and saluted him weeping.
ثُمَّ قامَ فَصَلّى أربَعَ رَكَعاتٍ ـ وفي خَبَرٍ آخَرَ : سِتَّ رَكَعاتٍ ـ وصَلَّيتُ مَعَهُ ،
Thereafter he stood and prayed four units - or six units‚ according to another account - and I prayed with him.
وقُلتُ لَهُ : يَابنَ رَسولِ اللّهِ ما هذَا القَبرُ ؟
I said to him: ‘O son of the Messenger of God, whose grave is this?’
قالَ: هذَا القَبرُ قَبرُ جَدّي عَلِيِّ بنِ أبي طالِبٍ عليه السلام .
He said: ‘This is the grave of my ancestor Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS).’ ”

ز ـ ثَوابُ زِيارَتِهِ
Reward for Visiting Him
551. رسول اللّه صلى الله عليه و آله :
551. The Prophet (SA) said:
مَن زارَ عَلِيّا بَعدَ وَفاتِهِ فَلَهُ الجَنَّةُ .
“Whoever visits Ali after his death, his reward is Paradise.”

552. تهذيب الأحكام عن جعفر بن محمّد بن مالك عن رجاله يرفعه :
552. Tahdhib al-Ahkam, reporting from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad ibn Malik, from his reporters, who said:
كُنتُ عِندَ جَعفَرِ بنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الصّادِقِ عليهماالسلام وقَد ذَكَرَ أميرَ المُؤمِنينَ عَلِيَّ بنَ أبي طالِبٍ عليه السلام
“I was with Ja’far ibn Muhammad al-Sadiq (AS) when he mentioned the Commander of the Faithful Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS).
فَقالَ ابنُ مارِدٍ لِأَبي عَبدِ اللّهِ عليه السلام :
Ibn Marid said to Abu Abdillah (AS):
ما لِمَن زارَ جَدَّكَ أميرَ المُؤمِنينَ عليه السلام ؟
What is [the reward] for him who visits your ancestor‚ the Commander of the Faithful (AS)?
فَقالَ : يَابنَ مارِدٍ ، مَن زارَ جَدّي عارِفاً بِحَقِّهِ
He said: O Ibn Marid, whoever visits my ancestor knowing his right,
كَتَبَ اللّهُ لَهُ بِكُلِّ خُطوَةٍ حَجَّةً مَقبولَةً وعُمرَةً مَبرورَةً ،
God will write for him for every step an acceptable Hajj and Umrah.
وَاللّهِ يَابنَ مارِدٍ ما يُطعِمُ اللّهُ النّارَ قَدَما اغبَرَّت في زِيارَةِ أميرِ المُؤمِنينَ عليه السلام
By God, O Ibn Marid! God will not feed a dust-covered foot, having visited the Commander of the Faithful the Fire,
ماشِيا كانَ أو راكِبا ،
be it walking or riding.
يَابنَ مارِدٍ !
O Ibn Marid!
اُكتُب هذَا الحَديثَ بِماءِ الذَّهَبِ .
‘Write this report with liquid gold.”
