Imam al-Jawad (AS) in the Scale of Wisdom

Seeking Allah with the hearts is more effective than tiring the limbs with actions.

الإمامُ الجوادُ عليه السلام : إنّ الإمامَ بَعدي ابْنِي عليٌّ، أمرُهُ أمري ، وقَولُهُ قَولي ، وطاعَتُهُ طاعَتي ، والإمامةُ بعدَهُ في ابنِهِ الحسنِ . بحار الأنوار : 50 / 118 / 1 .

 Imam al-Jawad (AS) said, 'Certainly the Imam after me is my son Ali. His command is my command, his word is my word, obedience to him is obedience to me and the Imama after him will rest with his son al-Hasan.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 50, p. 118, no. 1

الإمامُ‏الجوادُ عليه السلام : كانتْ مُبايَعةُ رسولِ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله النِّساءَ أنْ يَغْمِسَ يَدَهُ في إناءٍ فيهِ ماءٌ ثُمّ يُخرِجُها ، وتَغمِسَ النِّساءُ بأيْديهِنَّ في ذلكَ الإناءِ بالإقْرارِ والإيمانِ باللَّهِ والتّصديقِ برسولِهِ . تحف العقول : 457 .

 Imam al-Jawad (AS) said, 'The way in which the women gave allegiance to the Prophet (SAWA) was that he immersed his hand in a bowl filled with water then he took it out. The women then immersed their hands in the bowl as a sign of their acknowledgement and belief in Allah, and belief in his Messenger.' Tuhaf al-Uqul, no. 457

الإمامُ الجوادُ عليه السلام : تأخِيرُ التَّوبةِ اغْتِرارٌ، وطُولُ التّسْويفِ حَيْرَةٌ . تحف العقول : 456 .

 Imam al-Jawad (AS) said, 'Postponing repentance is an illusion, and long procrastination is perplexity.' Tuhaf al-Uqul, no. 456

الإمامُ الجوادُ عليه السلام : أوْحى‏ اللَّهُ إلى‏ بعضِ الأنبياءِ : أمّا زُهدُكَ في الدُّنيا فَتُعَجِّلُكَ الرّاحَةَ ، وأمّا انْقِطاعُكَ إلَيَّ فيُعَزّزُكَ بِي ، ولكنْ هَل عادَيْتَ لي عَدُوّاً ووالَيْتَ لي وَليّاً؟ تحف العقول : 455 .

 Imam al-Jawad (AS) said, 'Allah revealed to one of the prophets, "Your asceticism in this world hastens your comfort, and your devotion to Me endears you to Me. But did you oppose an enemy [of Mine] for My sake or did you befriend a friend for Me?" Tuhaf al-Uqul, no. 455

الإمامُ الجوادُ عليه السلام : كَفى‏ بالمَرءِ خِيانَةً أنْ يكونَ أميناً للخَوَنَةِ . بحار الأنوار : 78 / 364 / 4 .

 Imam al-Jawad (AS) said, 'It is sufficient for someone to be classified as a betrayer if he is the trustee of a disloyal person.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 78, p. 364, no. 4

الإمامُ الجوادُ عليه السلام : مُلاقاةُ الإخوانِ نُشْرَةٌ وتَلقيحُ العَقلِ ، وإن كانَ نَزْراً قَليلاً . بحار الأنوار : 74 / 353 / 26 .

Imam al-Jawad (AS) said, 'Meeting fellow brothers, even very briefly, causes the mind to broaden and develop.' Bihar al-Anwar, p. 353, no. 26

الإمامُ الجوادُ عليه السلام : مَن زارَ قَبرَ عَمَّتِي بِقُمّ فَلَهُ الجَنَّةُ . بحار الأنوار : 102 / 265 / 3 .

 Imam al-Jawad (AS) said, 'Whoever visits the grave of my aunt in Qum is guaranteed Paradise.' Bihar al-Anwar, p. 265, no. 3

الإمامُ الجوادُ عليه السلام : إظهارُ الشَّي‏ءِ قبلَ أن يَستَحكِمَ مَفسَدَةٌ لَهُ . بحار الأنوار : 75 / 71 / 13 .

 Imam al-Jawad (AS) said, 'Exposing something before it has become consolidated will ruin it.' Bihar al-Anwar, p. 71, no. 13

الإمامُ الجوادُ عليه السلام : الصَّبرُ عَلَى المُصيبَةِ ، مُصيبَةٌ عَلَى الشامِتِ بها . كشف الغمّة : 3 / 139 .

 Imam al-Jawad (AS) said, ‘Patience in the face of a misfortune is itself a misfortune for the one who gloats over your bad luck.’ Kashf al-Ghamma, v. 3, p. 139

الإمامُ الجوادُ عليه السلام : أفضَلُ العِبادَةِ الإخلاصُ . تنبيه الخواطر : 2 / 109 .

 Imam al-Jawad (AS) said, ‘The best form of worship is sincerity.’ Tanbih al-Khawatir, v. 2, p. 109

الإمامُ الجوادُ عليه السلام : أهلُ المَعروفِ إلَى اصطِناعِه أحوَجُ مِن أهلِ الحاجَةِ إلَيهِ ؛ لأِنَّ لَهُم أجرَهُ وفَخرَهُ وذِكرَهُ ، فمَهما اصطَنَعَ الرَّجُلُ مِن مَعروفٍ فإنَّما يَبدأ فيهِ بِنَفسِهِ ، فلا يَطلُبَنَّ شُكرَ ما صَنَعَ إلى‏ نَفسِهِ مِن غَيرِهِ . كشف الغمّة : 3 / 137 .

 Imam al-Jawad (AS) said, ‘People who perform acts of courtesy towards others benefit more from them than the receptors of their kindness, for verily they have the reward for them, the [rewarding feeling of] pride for having helped someone as well as a mention. So however much good a man may do for others, it ultimately always starts by benefiting himself, and hence he never seeks thanks for the benefit incurred by himself through helping others.’ Kashf al-Ghamma, v. 3, p. 137

الإمامُ الجوادُ عليه السلام : مَنِ استَحسَنَ قَبيحاً كانَ شَريكاً فيهِ . كشف الغمّة : 3 / 139 .

 Imam al-Jawad (AS) said, ‘He who approves of a wicked deed partakes in it.’ Kashf al-Ghamma, v. 3, p. 139

الإمامُ الجوادُ عليه السلام : الفَضائلُ أربَعةُ أجناسٍ : أحَدُها : الحِكمَةُ ، وقِوامُها في الفِكرَةِ ، والثاني : العِفَّةُ ، وقِوامُها في الشَّهوَةِ ، والثالثُ : القُوَّةُ ، وقِوامُها في الغَضَبِ ، والرابِعُ : العَدلُ ، وقِوامُهُ في اعتِدالِ قُوَى النفسِ . كشف الغمّة : 3 / 138 .

 Imam al-Jawad (AS) said, 'There are four types of merits: the first is wisdom, and its basis is thinking. The second is chastity, and its basis is desire. The third is power, and its basis is anger. The fourth is justice, and its basis is moderation in the faculties of the self.' Kashf al-Ghamma, v. 3, p. 138

الإمامُ الجوادُ عليه السلام : القَصدُ إلَى اللَّهِ تعالى‏ بالقُلوبِ أبلَغُ مِن إتعابِ الجَوارحِ بالأعمالِ . الدّرة الباهرة : 39 .

 Imam al-Jawad (AS) said, 'Seeking Allah with the hearts is more effective than tiring the limbs with actions.' al-Durra al-Bahira, p. 39

الإمام الجوادُ عليه السلام - لمّا سُئل عن المَوتِ - : هُو النَّومُ الّذي يأتيكُم كُلَّ ليلَةٍ إلّا أنّهُ طويلٌ مُدَّتُهُ لا يُنتَبَهُ مِنهُ إلّا يَومَ القيامَةِ ، فمَن رأى‏ في نَومِهِ من أصنافِ الفَرَحِ ما لا يُقادِرُ قَدرَهُ ، ومِن أصنافِ الأهوالِ ما لا يُقادِرُ قَدرَهُ ، فكيفَ حالُ فَرِحٍ في النَّومِ ووَجِلٍ فيهِ ؟ هذا هُو المَوتُ ، فاستَعِدُّوا لَهُ . معاني الأخبار : 289 / 5 .

 Imam al-Jawad (AS), when asked about death said, 'It is the sleep that comes to you every night, however its period is long and none will wake from it until the Day of Resurrection. So he who sees in his sleep different kinds of happy states whose extent he cannot fathom and different kinds of terrors he cannot fathom, then how does the happy and the dismayed feel in death? This is death so prepare for it.' Maani al-Akhbar, p. 289, no. 5

الإمامُ الجوادُ عليه السلام - لَمّا سَألَهُ عبدُ العَظيمِ الحَسَنيُّ عن ذي الكِفلِ ما اسمُهُ ؟ وهلَ كانَ مِن المُرسَلينَ ؟ - : بَعَثَ اللَّهُ تعالى‏ جَلَّ ذِكرُهُ مِائةَ ألفِ نَبيٍّ وأربَعةً وعِشرينَ ألفَ نَبيٍّ ، المُرسَلونَ مِنهُم ثلاثُمِائةٍ وثلاثَةَ عَشَرَ رجُلاً ، وإنّ ذا الكِفلِ مِنهُم صلواتُ اللَّهِ علَيهِم . وكانَ بَعدَ سُليمانَ بنِ داوودَ عليه السلام ، وكانَ يَقضي بينَ النّاسِ كما كانَ يَقضي داوودُ ، ولَم يَغضَبْ إلّا للَّهِ عَزَّوجلَّ ، وكانَ اسمُهُ عُويديا ، وهُو الّذي ذَكرَهُ اللَّهُ تعالى‏ جَلّت عظَمتُهُ في كِتابهِ حيثُ قالَ : (واذْكُرْ إسْماعيلَ واليَسَعَ وذا الكِفْلِ وكُلٌّ مِنَ الأخْيارِ) . قصص الأنبياء : 213 / 277 .

 Imam al-Jawad (AS) - when Abd al-Azim al-Hasani asked him about Dhul Kifl and his name, and whether he was a messenger, said, 'Allah, exalted be His remembrance, sent one-hundred-and-twenty-four-thousand prophets, of whom three hundred and thirteen were messengers, and Dhul Kifl was one of them, peace of Allah be upon them all. He was after Solomon, son of David (AS), and he used to judge between people like David did before him. He never became angry other than for Allah, and his name was Uwaydiya'. He is the one Allah, Mighty and Exalted, has mentioned in His book, saying "remember Ishmael, Elisha and Dhu'l-Kifl each [of whom was] among the elect." Qasas al-Anbiya', p. 213, no. 277

الإمامُ الجوادُ عليه السلام : الثِّقَةُ باللَّهِ تعالى‏ ثَمَنٌ لِكُلِّ غالٍ ، وسُلَّمٌ إلى‏ كُلِّ عالٍ . بحار الأنوار : 78 / 364 / 5 .

 Imam al-Jawad (AS) said, 'Reliance on Allah is the price for every expensive matter and a ladder to everything high.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 78, no. 364, no. 5

الإمامُ الجوادُ عليه السلام : مَن أصغى‏ إلى‏ ناطِقٍ فقَد عَبَدَهُ، فإن كانَ النّاطِقُ يُؤَدّي عَنِ اللَّهِ عَزَّوجلَّ فقَد عَبَدَ اللَّهَ، وإن كانَ النّاطِقُ يُؤَدّي عنِ الشَّيطانِ فقَد عَبَدَ الشَّيطانَ . الكافي : 6 / 434 / 24 .

 Imam al-Jawad (AS) said, ‘Whoever gives a speaker his full attention has indeed expressed a form of worship or adulation to him. If the speaker leads one to Allah through his words, then it is as if one worships Allah [by giving him attention], but if he leads one to Satan through his words, it is as if one worships Satan.’ Al-Kafi, v. 6, p. 434, no. 24

الإمامُ الجوادُ عليه السلام : قَد عاداكَ مَن سَتَرَ عَنكَ الرُّشدَ اتِّباعاً لِما تَهواهُ . أعلام الدين : 309 .

 Imam al-Jawad (AS) said, ‘He who conceals [the path] of proper conduct from you in making you follow that which you desire is indeed your enemy.’ Alam al-Din, no. 309
