The Determination to Fight Muawiyah

487. Tarikh al-Tabari, reporting from Abi al-Darda, who said:

“When Ali finished with the people of al-Nahrawan, he praised God and lauded Him and said:

‘ Indeed, God had been kind to you,

honoured your victory,

so march forth to your enemy right now.’

They said:

‘O Commander of the Faithful,

our arrows are depleted,

swords blunt,

the head of our spears weakened.

Return [us] to our cities,

so that we may have better preparedness,

for it maybe that the Commander of the Faithful will increase our preparedness by replacing those that were killed amongst us.’

It was al-Ashath ibn Qays who uttered these words.

He [Ali] continued until he arrived at the entrance of Nukhayla. [A place near Kufa in the direction of Syria where Imam Ali had camped. Mu‘jam al-Buldan, vol. 5, p. 278.]

He commanded the people to stick to their camps,

prepare themselves for the struggle

and, limit their visits to their wives and children

until they march towards their enemy.

They remained a few days,

but they began to sneak away from their camps.

Most of them entered the city except a few of the prominent personalities ,

and the camps were left empty.

When he [Ali] saw this, he entered Kufah,

having determined not to march.”

The Imam Reproaching His Companions

488. Al-Gharat, reporting from Qays ibn al-Sakan, who said:

“I heard Ali (AS) say while we were at Maskin [A place in Kufa near to Awana on the banks of the Dujail River, that is where the battle between Abdul Malik Ibn Marwan and Musab Ibn al-Zubayr took place. Musab was killed. His grave is there and it is known. Mu‘jam al-Buldan, vol. 5, p. 127.] :

O company of the Muhajirin!

“Enter the Holy Land which God has ordained for you, and do not turn your backs or you will become losers”. Quran, 5:21

‘They loitered and said:

 ‘The coldness is intense.’

Their battle was in the cold.

He (AS) said: “The people (ie the enemy) find it cold as you do.”

He said: ‘They did not march forth and refused.

When he (AS) noticed this from them,

he said: “Woe unto you!

You have been accustomed to such (ugly) normative rule.’ ”
