Sayyed Mahdi Lotfi

Zahra Mohaqeqian

Despite the presence of Hanash ibn al-Mu`tamar in the chain of documents of several traditions of the Shia tradition, there is little information exists about this narrator in Shia rijal sources.

There are conflicting opinions about the authenticity or weakness of the narrator in Sunni rijal sources. Fourteen traditions are found in Shia and Sunni sources which are narrated by Hanash ibn al-Mu`tamar in matters of faith, moral and juridical. The dominant theme of the traditions is about the excellence and superiority of Imam Ali (a.s) over the other Companions and his high position with the Prophet (s.a). It seems his tradition about Imam Ali (a.s) is the reason for being discredited by some Sunni scholars. Moreover, his name has been recorded in various forms in Shia and Sunni hadith sources: "Hanash ibn Rabiah", " Hanash ibn Kanani" and "Hanash ibn Mughira". In some Sunni sources, these names have been considered to be the names of different people. The authors of the present article first investigates the identity of the narrator trying to verify the different names of the narrator of the hadith, then examines its reliability.
