Historicity in Religious Texts

Sayyid Muhammad Ali Ayazi

A simple definition of hermeneutics is textual interpretation, or, in other words, finding meaning in the written word. The term hermeneutics was derived from two words -- the Greek verb hermeneuein, meaning to interpret, and the noun hermeneia, meaning interpretation. This method of textual analysis emphasizes the historic influences on qualitative interpretation. It also exposes hidden meanings. Historically, hermeneutics has been associated with the interpretation of religious texts. Nowadays scholars seek to identify the literal or authentic meanings of narrations so they can explain them. This paper argues that the content of the hadith is related to its synchronic conditions, customs, practices and the characteristics of those days.

Key Words: Hermeneutics, Textual Interpretation, Meaning, Interpretation.
