Encyclopedia of Karbala Unveiled

The first historical-cultural encyclopedia of the holy city of Karbala was unveiled in a ceremony at “Karbala” Center for Research Studies affiliated to the Astan (custodianship) of Imam Hussein (AS) holy shrine.

According to the Astan’s website, the program was attended by a number of researchers, scholars and intellectuals from different parts of Iraq.

Abdul Amir Quraishi, director of the center, said that the encyclopedia features the history of the holy city from the pre-Islamic period.

The entire collection will be completed in 100 parts from which 40 parts have been published so far, he added.

It covers geographical, historical, social, political and economic issues as well as the important events in the holy city, he noted.

The director said that different jobs, proverbs, clothes and other items related to the lifestyle of the people in Karbala have also been introduced in the encyclopedia.

It has been compiled by 150 scholars from different universities in Iraq as well as Iran, Turkey and some other countries, he went on to say.
