Author of Al-Mizan Quran Exegesis Commemorated

A ceremony was held in Tehran on Monday to commemorate Allameh Seyed Mohammad Hossein Tabatabaei (1903-1981), a prominent Shia scholar and author of Al-Mizan Exegesis of the Holy Quran.

Organized by the Society for Appreciation of Cultural Works and Dignitaries, it was addressed by a number of cultural, religious and political figures.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in a message that was read out at the ceremony underlined the influential role of late Allameh Tabatabaei in various fields, stressing that he was among the ideological treasures of the Muslim world.

Senior Shia cleric Ayatollah Abdollah Javadi Amoli, who was a student of Allameh Tabatabaei, also addressed the event via video-conference, stressing that Allameh Tabatabaei wrote Al-Mizan and interpreted the Quran by Quran.

Other speakers elaborated on the importance of Allameh Tabatabaei’s works in different religious, scholarly and Quranic fields.

Allameh Tabatabaei was one of the most prominent thinkers of philosophy and contemporary Shia Islam.

He is famous for Al-Mizan Exegesis or Tafsir al-Mizan, a twenty-volume work of Quranic exegesis, which he worked on from 1954 until 1972.

He wrote a large number of other books in different fields such as Islamic beliefs, Hadiths, philosophy, etc.

Among his major books are “Shia Islam”, “The Principles of Philosophy and the Method of Realism”, and “Glosses al-Kifayah”.

In 1982, the World Organization for Islamic Studies (WOFIS) based in Qom, Iran were contemplating to publish an exegesis of the Quran in English in order to bring the sublime meanings and divine themes of the Quran to the average human mind in the best possible manner and found Al-Mizan to meet all their requirements to a great extent.
