Quran Competition Planned in London

The Islamic Center of England will organize the 19th edition of its annual Quran competition later in the holy month of Ramadan.

The competition is slated to be held in the British capital of London on Saturday and Sunday, June 10-11, according to the website of the center.

Participants will compete in the three categories of Quran recitation, memorization and Tafsir (interpretation).

During the holy month, Islamic Center of England holds a number of other Quranic programs as well.

They include Tartil recitation of one Juz (part) of the Quran every day before the Maghrib prayer.

There will also be Quranic courses for teenagers and the youth, Quran recitation sessions, and speeches delivered under the title of "Lessons from the Quran”.

The Islamic Centre of England-London (ICEL) was founded in December 1995, and opened officially in November 1998.

According to its website, the center, in common with other Islamic organizations in Europe, wishes to provide spiritual guidance for the Muslim community at large, and also wishes to cater for the social, cultural, educational and recreational needs of members of the community – especially women and the next generation.

The center’s other main objective manifests itself in its sincere effort to disseminate authentic knowledge about Islam and to provide non-Muslims with a better and clearer understanding of Islam.
