Imam al-Askari (AS) in the Scale of Wisdom

None but the thankful one knows the true worth of a bounty, and none but the one with inner knowledge [or gnostic] is truly thankful for a bounty.

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام - وقد سُئلَ عن الحُجّةِ والإمامِ بعدَهُ ؟ - : ابْنِي محمّدٌ ، وهُو الإمامُ والحُجّةُ بَعدي ، مَن ماتَ ولَم يَعرفْهُ ماتَ مِيتةً جاهليّةً . أمَا إنّ لَه غَيبةً يَحارُ فيها الجاهلونَ ، ويَهْلِكُ فيها المُبطِلونَ ، ويَكْذِبُ فيها الوَقّاتونَ ، ثُمّ يَخرُجُ فكَأنّي أنظُرُ إلَى الأعْلامِ البِيضِ تَخْفِقُ فوقَ رأسِهِ بِنَجفِ الكوفةِ . بحار الأنوار : 51 / 160 / 7 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS), when asked about the proof [of Allah] and the Imam after him, said, 'My son Muhammad will be the Imam and the proof after me. Whoever dies without acknowledging him [as the Imam] has died a death of ignorance. Know that certainly he will have an occultation, about which the ignorant will be left confused, the impugners will be ruined and those who predict a specific time [for his reappearance] will lie. Then he will emerge and it is as if I can see the white flags hovering above his head in Najaf [near] Kufa.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 51, p. 160, no. 7

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : مَن أنِسَ باللَّهِ اسْتَوحَشَ مِن النّاسِ . الدرّة الباهرة : 43 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) said, 'A man who finds intimacy with Allah feels lonely among people.' al-Durra al-Bahira, p. 43

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : ما مِن بَلِيّةٍ إلّا وللَّهِ فيها نِعمَةٌ تُحيطُ بِها . بحار الأنوار : 78 / 374 / 34 .

 Imam al-'Askari (AS) said, 'Every single ordeal contains a favor from Allah that encompasses it.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 78, p. 373, no. 34

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : ذُكرَ عند الصّادقِ عليه السلام الجِدالُ في الدِّينِ، وأنّ رسولَ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله والأئمّةَ المعصومينَ عليهم السلام قد نَهَوا عنه ، فقالَ الصّادقُ عليه السلام : لَم يُنْهَ عنهُ مطلَقاً ، لكنَّهُ نهى‏ عنِ الجِدالِ بغيرِ الّتي هِي أحسَنُ . بحار الأنوار : 2 / 125 / 2 .

 Imam al-'Askari (AS) narrated, 'The subject of disputing about religion was mentioned in the presence of al-Sadiq (AS), and that the Prophet (SAWA) and the infallible Imams(AS) prohibited it. So al-Sadiq (AS) said, 'He never prohibited it absolutely, but only prohibited dispute in ways that are not the best.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 2, p. 125, no. 2

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : حُسنُ الصُّورةِ جَمالٌ ظاهِرٌ ، وحُسنُ العَقلِ جَمالٌ باطِنٌ . أعلام الدين : 313 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) said, 'Physical beauty is the outer beauty, and the beauty of the intellect is inner beauty.' Alam al-Din, no. 313

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : مِن الجَهلِ الضّحكُ من غيرِ عَجَبٍ . تحف العقول : 487 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) said, 'Ignorance is to laugh without any reason.' Tuhaf al-Uqul, no. 487

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : أقلُّ النّاسِ راحةً الحَقودُ . تحف العقول : 488 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) said, 'Among people, the person with the least comfort is the resentful one.' Tuhaf al-Uqul, no. 488

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : أعْرَفُ النّاسِ بحُقوقِ إخْوانِهِ وأشَدُّهُم قَضاءً لَها أعْظَمُهُم عِند اللَّهِ شَأناً . الاحتجاج : 2 / 517 / 340 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) said, 'The person who best knows the rights of his brethren and is the most diligent of all at fulfilling them is the one who has the greatest esteem in the sight of Allah.' al-Ihtijaj, v. 2, p. 517, no. 340

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : خَيرٌ مِن الحياةِ ما إذا فَقَدْتَهُ أبْغَضْتَ الحياةَ ، وشَرٌّ مِن المَوتِ ما إذا نَزَلَ بِكَ أحْبَبتَ المَوتَ . تحف العقول : 489 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) said, 'Better than life is that thing which if you lose it you become disgusted with life, and worse than death is that thing which if it comes to you makes you love death.' Tuhaf al-Uqul, no. 489

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام - في تفسيرِ البَسْملَةِ - : اللَّهُ هُو الّذي يَتألَّهُ إلَيهِ عِندَ الحَوائجِ والشَّدائدِ كُلُّ مَخْلوقٍ عِندَ انْقِطاعِ الرَّجاءِ مِن كُلِّ مَن هُوَ دُونَهُ ، وتَقَطُّعِ الأسْبابِ مِن جَميعِ مَن سِواهُ . التوحيد : 231 / 5 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) said in his explanation of the basmala, 'Allah is the one whom all creation deify when they are in need or in difficulty or when all their hopes have been severed from all except Him, and when their means of attainment have been cut off from all except Him.' Al-Tawhid, p. 231, no. 5

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : لا يَشغَلْكَ رِزقٌ مَضمونٌ عن عَمَلٍ مَفروضٍ . بحار الأنوار : 78 / 374 / 22 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) said, 'Do not let [preoccupation with] a sustenance that is guaranteed avert you from an act that is incumbent.'

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام - لأبي هاشمِ الجَعفريِّ - : قَبرِي بِسُرَّ مَن رَأى أمانٌ لِأهلِ الجانِبَينِ . بحار الأنوار : 102 / 59 / 1 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) said to Abu Hashim al-Jafari, 'My grave will be in Surra Man Ra'a [present day Samarra] and will be a place of security for people on both sides of it [Euphrates].' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 102, p. 59, no. 1

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : إنَّ للسَّخاءِ مِقداراً ، فإن زادَ علَيهِ فهُو سَرَفٌ . الدرّة الباهرة : 43 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) said, 'Generosity has a set limit, and if taken to extremes becomes squandering.' al-Durra al-Bahira, p. 43,

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : إنَّ ... للشَّجاعَةِ مِقداراً ، فإن زادَ علَيهِ فهُو تَهَوُّرٌ . بحار الأنوار : 78 / 377 / 3 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) said, 'Verily... courage has a limit, which when overstepped becomes foolhardiness.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 78, p. 377, no. 3

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : لا يَعرِفُ النِّعمَةَ إلّا الشاكِرُ ، ولا يَشكُرُ النِّعمَةَ إلّا العارِفُ . أعلام الدين : 313 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) said, ‘None but the thankful one knows the true worth of a bounty, and none but the one with inner knowledge [or gnostic] is truly thankful for a bounty.’ Alam al-Din, p. 313

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام - لمّا سُئلَ عن عِلَّةِ وُجوبِ الصَّومِ - : لِيَجِدَ الغَنِيُّ مَسَّ الجُوعِ؛ فَيَمُنَّ على الفَقيرِ . بحار الأنوار : 96 / 369 / 50 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) was once asked the reasoning behind the obligation of fasting, to which he replied, ‘That the rich may experience the pain of hunger and bestow his generosity thereby upon the poor.’ Bihar al-Anwar, v. 96, p. 369, no. 50

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : ما أقبَحَ بالمُؤمِنِ أن تكونَ لَهُ رَغبَةٌ تُذِلُّهُ . بحار الأنوار : 78 / 374 / 35 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) said, ‘How revolting it is for the believer to have an avid desire that disgraces him.’ Bihar al-Anwar, v. 78, p. 374, no. 35

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : إنَّ اللَّهَ تَبارَكَ وتَعالى‏ أرى‏ رَسولَهُ بِقَلبِهِ مِن نورِ عَظَمَتِهِ ما أحَبَّ . الكافي : 1 / 95 / 1 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) said, ‘Verily Allah, Blessed and most High, displayed to His Prophet in his heart, whatever He liked from the light of His Greatness.’ al-Kafi, v. 1, p. 95, no. 1

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : ما تَرَكَ الحَقَّ عَزيزٌ إلّا ذَلَّ ، ولا أخَذَ بِهِ ذَليلٌ إلّا عَزَّ . بحار الأنوار : 78 / 374 / 24 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) said, ‘No sooner does an honourable man abandon the truth than he is abased, and no sooner does a disgraced man adopt it than he is honoured.’ Bihar al-Anwar, v. 78, p. 374, no. 24

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : الوَحشَةُ مِنَ النّاسِ عَلى‏ قَدرِ الفِطنَةِ بِهِم . بحار الأنوار : 70 / 111 / 14 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) said, ‘Estrangement from people comes about as a direct result of knowing them too well.’ Bihar al-Anwar, v. 70, p. 111, no. 14

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام - في صِفَةِ عُلَماءِ السُّوءِ - : وهُم أضَرُّ عَلى‏ ضُعَفاءِ شيعَتِنا مِن جَيشِ يَزيدَ عَلى الحُسَينِ بنِ عَلِيٍّ عليهما السلام وأصحابِهِ ، فإنَّهُم يَسلُبونَهُمُ الأرواحَ والأموالَ ، وهؤلاءِ عُلَماءُ السُّوءِ ... يُدخِلونَ الشَّكَّ والشُّبهَةَ عَلى‏ ضُعَفاءِ شيعَتِنا فيُضِلّونَهُم . الاحتجاج : 2 / 512 / 337 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS), in his description of evil scholars, said, ‘They cause more harm to the weak ones from among our Shia than the army of Yazid did to Husayn b. Ali (AS) and his companions, for they snatched away their lives and their property, whereas these evil scholars… enter doubt and obscurity into the weak ones from among our Shia and lead them astray.’ al-Ihtijaj, v. 2, p. 512, no. 337

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : إذا كانَ المَقضيُّ كائِناً فالضَّراعَةُ لماذا ؟ ! نزهة الناظر : 147 / 21 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) said, 'Since decrees are concealed, wherefore the need for begging?!' Nuzhat al-Nazir, p. 147, no. 21

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : إذا نَشِطَتِ القُلوبُ فَأودِعْها (فَأودِعُوها) ، وإذا نَفرَت فَوَدِّعُوها . الدّرة الباهرة : 43 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) said, 'When the hearts are active commit them [to use], and when they are averse, leave them.' al-Durra al-Bahira, p. 43

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : فَأمّا مَن كانَ مِن الفُقَهاءِ صائناً لنفسِهِ حافِظاً لِدينِهِ مُخالِفاً على‏ هَواهُ مُطِيعاً لأمرِ مَولاهُ فلِلعَوامِّ أن يُقَلِّدُوهُ ، وذلكَ لا يكونُ إلّا بَعضَ فُقَهاءِ الشِّيعَةِ لا جَميعَهُم . الاحتجاج : 2 / 510 / 337 .

 Imam Hasan al-Askari (AS), 'Whoever from among the jurists safeguards himself, is protective of his religion, opposes his temptations, is obedient to his Master's commands, then the common people must emulate him, and this is only [applicable to] some of the Shia jurists, not all of them.' al-Ihtijaj, v. 2, p. 510, no. 337

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : جُعِلَتِ الخَبائثُ في بَيتٍ وجُعِلَ مِفتاحُهُ الكذبَ . الدّرة الباهرة : 43 .

 Imam al-'Askari (AS) said, 'The malicious sins have all been put in one house, and the key for it is lying.' al-Durra al-Bahira, p. 43

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : مَن مَدَحَ غَيرَ المُستَحِقِّ فَقَد قامَ مَقامَ المُتَّهَمِ . أعلام الدين : 313 .

 Imam al-'Askari (AS) said, 'He who praises one who is not worthy of it, stands to be suspected!' Alam al-Din, p. 313

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : لا تُمارِ فيَذهَبَ بَهاؤكَ ، ولاتُمازِحْ فيُجتَرأَ علَيكَ . تحف العقول : 486 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) said, 'Do not dispute lest your splendour fade, and do not joke lest people feel defiant towards you.' Tuhaf al-Uqul, p. 486

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : مَن أكثَرَ المَنامَ رأَى الأحلامَ . الدرّة الباهرة : 43 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) said, 'He who sleeps too much sees [disturbing] dreams.' al-Durra al-Bahira, p. 43

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : التَّواضُعُ نِعمَةٌ لا يُحسَدُ علَيها . تحف العقول : 489 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) said, 'Humbleness is a blessing that cannot be envied.' Tuhaf al-'Uqul, p. 489

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : مَن وَعَظَ أخاهُ سِرّاً فَقَد زانَهُ ، ومَن وَعَظَهُ عَلانِيَةً فَقَد شانَهُ . تحف العقول : 489 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) said, 'He who exhorts his brother in secret has indeed adorned him, and he who exhorts him in public has dishonoured him.' Tuhaf al-Uqul, no. 489

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : مَن لَم يَتَّقِ وُجوهَ النّاسِ لَم يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ . بحار الأنوار : 78 / 377 / 3 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) said, 'He who is not wary before people does not have wariness of Allah.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 78, p. 377, no. 3

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : إنَّ الوُصولَ إلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّوجلَّ سَفَرٌ لا يُدرَكُ إلّا بامتِطاءِ اللَّيلِ . بحار الأنوار : 78 / 380 / 4 .

 Imam al-'Askari (AS) said, 'Reaching Allah, Mighty and Exalted, is a journey that cannot be accomplished without mounting the night [i.e. night vigil].' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 78, p. 380, no. 4

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : الجَهلُ خَصْمٌ . الدرّة الباهرة : 44 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) said, 'Ignorance is an enemy.' al-Durra al-Bahira, no. 44

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : لَو عَقَلَ أهلُ الدنيا خَرِبَتْ . بحار الأنوار : 78 / 377 / 3 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) said, 'If the inhabitants of this world used their intellect, the world would self-destruct [for it would cease to be of any importance].' Bihar al-Anwar, p. 377, no. 3

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : إنّ للسَّخاءِ مِقداراً فإنْ زادَ علَيهِ فهُو سَرَفٌ . بحار الأنوار : 69 / 407 / 115 .

الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام: مِنَ الجَهلِ الضَّحكُ مِن غَيرِ عَجَبٍ . بحار الأنوار : 76 / 59 / 10 .

 Imam al-Askari (AS) said, ‘Laughing without cause stems from ignorance.’ Bihar al-Anwar, v. 76, p. 59, no. 10

الإمام العسكريّ علیه السلام : جُرأَةُ الوَلَدِ عَلى والِدِهِ في صِغَرِهِ، تَدعو إلَى العُقوقِ في كِبَرِهِ. تحف العقول: ص 489.

 Imam al-‘Askari (a.s.) said: “The boldness of a child in his childhood against his father will invite to his disobedience in his adulthood.” Tuhaf al-‘Uqul, p. 489.

الإمام العسكري علیه السلام ـ لِجَعفَرِ بنِ الشَّريفِ الجُرجانِيِّ ـ : شَكَرَ الله‏ُ لِأَبي إِسحاقَ إِبراهيمَ بنِ إسماعيلَ صَنيعَتَهُ إِلى شيعَتِنا، و غَفَرَ لَهُ ذُنوبَهُ، و رَزَقَهُ ذَكَراً سَوِيّاً قائِلاً بِالحَقِّ، فَقُل لَهُ: يَقولُ لَكَ الحَسَنُ بنُ عَليٍّ: سَمِّ ابنَكَ أَحمَدَ. الخرائج والجرائح: ج 1 ص 424 ح 4، كشف الغمّة: ج 3 ص 217 كلاهما عن جعفر بن الشريف الجرجاني.

 Imam Hasan al-‘Askari (a.s.) said to Ja‘far ibn Sharif al-Jurjāni: “May Allah thank and reward Abu Ishāq Ibrāhim ibn Ismā‘il for his service to our followers, and may He forgive his sins and bless him with a good son who believes in the truth. Tell him that al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali says: “Name your son Ahmad.” al-Kharā'ij wa al-Jarā'ih, vol. 1, p. 424, h. 4. Kashf al-Ghummah, vol. 3, p. 217. Both narrating from Ja‘far ibn al-Sharif al-Jurjāni.
