Imam al-Hasan (AS) in the Scale of Wisdom

A man devoid of reason cannot have good manners.

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : لا أدبَ لِمَن لا عَقْلَ لَهُ . بحار الأنوار : 78 / 111 / 6 .

Imam al-Hasan (AS) said, 'A man devoid of reason cannot have good manners.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 78, p. 111, no. 6

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : فِي المَائدةِ اثْنَتَا عَشرَةَ خَصْلَةً يَجِبُ عَلى‏ كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ أنْ يَعْرِفَهَا : أرْبَعٌ مِنْها فَرْضٌ ، وَ أرْبَعٌ سُنَّةٌ، وأرْبَعٌ تأدِيبٌ. فَأمَّا الفَرْضُ : فَالمَعْرِفَةُ ، وَالرِّضَا ، وَالتَّسْمِيَةُ ، وَالشُّكْرُ . وَأمَّا السُّنَّةُ : فَالوُضُوءُ قَبْلَ الطَّعَامِ ، والجُلُوسُ عَلَى الجَانِبِ الأيْسَرِ ، والأكْلُ بِثَلاثِ أصَابِعَ ، وَلَعْقُ الأصَابِعِ. وَأمّا التَّأدِيبُ : فَالأكْلُ مِمَّا يَلِيكَ ، وَتَصْغِيرُ اللُّقْمَةِ، وَتَجْوِيدُ المَضْغِ ، وَقِلّةُ النّظَرِ فِي وُجُوهِ النّاسِ . وسائل الشيعة : 16 / 539 / 1 .

Imam al-Hasan (AS) said, 'There are twelve things that every Muslim should know about the table [manners]; four are mandatory, four are recommended, and four are general manners. The mandatory are: knowledge [of the food], to be content with it, mentioning the name of Allah [before it], and offering thanks to Him [afterwards]. The recommended acts are: ablution before eating, sitting on one's left side, eating with three fingers. And the general manners are: eating from the closest spot to you, taking small bites, chewing well, and looking less at people's faces [while eating].' Wasa'il al-Shia, v. 16, p. 539, no. 1

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : إنّ الحسينَ بنَ عليٍّ عليهما السلام ، بعدَ وفاةِ نَفْسي ومُفارَقَةِ رُوحي جِسْمي ، إمامٌ مِن بَعدي ، وعندَ اللَّهِ جلّ اسمُهُ في الكتابِ ، وِراثة مِن النّبيِّ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله أضافَها اللَّهُ عزّ وجلّ لَه في وِراثةِ أبيهِ واُمّهِ ، فعَلِمَ اللَّهُ أنّكم خِيَرةُ خَلقِهِ ، فاصْطَفى‏ مِنكُم مُحمّداً صلى اللَّه عليه وآله ، واختارَ محمّدٌ عليّاً عليه السلام ، واختارَني عليٌّ عليه السلام بالإمامةِ ، واخْتَرْتُ أنا الحُسَينَ عليه السلام . الكافي : 1 / 301 / 2 .

Imam al-Hasan (AS) said, 'Certainly Husayn b. Ali (AS) will be the Imam after my death and after my soul has departed from my body. And with Allah - exalted is His Name in the Book - is the legacy of the Prophet, which Allah has added to him along with the legacy of his father and mother. Indeed Allah knew that you are the best people among His creation, hence he chose from you Muhammad (SAWA), and Muhammad chose Ali (AS), and Ali (AS) chose me for the Imama, and I have chosen Husayn(AS).' al-Kafi, v. 1, p. 301, no. 2

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام - لَمّا سَألَهُ أبوهُ عنِ الشُّحِّ - : أن تَرى‏ ما في يَدَيكَ شَرَفاً وما أنفَقتَ تَلَفاً .  بحار الأنوار : 73 / 305 / 23 .

 Imam al-Hasan (AS), when his father asked him about greed, said, '[It is] when you count what is in your hands as a source of honour, while you count what you have given away as a waste.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 73, p. 305, no. 23

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام - وقد سُئلَ عن الجُبن - : الجُرأةُ على‏ الصَّديقِ ، والنُّكُولُ عَن العَدُوِّ . تحف العقول : 225 .

 Imam al-Hasan (AS), when asked about cowardice, replied, '[It is] aggressiveness with one's friends, and flight from one's enemy.' Tuhaf al-Uqul, no. 225

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام - لمّا سألَهُ أبوه عن تفسيرِ الجَهلِ - : سُرعةُ الوُثوبِ علَى الفُرْصةِ قبلَ الاسْتِمْكانِ مِنها ، والامْتِناعُ عنِ الجَوابِ . معاني الأخبار : 401 / 62 .

Imam al-Hasan (AS), when his father asked him the meaning of ignorance, said, 'It is hastening to snatch up an opportunity before having made oneself capable [of fulfilling it], and it is to refuse to answer.' Maani al-Akhbar, p. 401, no. 62

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام - وقد سُئلَ عنِ الحِلْمِ - : كَظْمُ الغَيظِ ومِلْكُ النَّفْسِ . بحار الأنوار : 78 / 102 / 2 .

Imam al-Hasan (AS), when asked about clemency, said, '[It is] suppressing one's anger and controlling oneself.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 78, p. 102, no. 7402

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : مَن عَبدَ اللَّهَ عَبّدَ اللَّهُ لَهُ كُلَّ شَي‏ءٍ . تنبيه الخواطر : 2 / 108 .

Imam al-Hasan (AS) said, 'The one who is subservient to Allah, Allah will make everything else subservient to him.' Tanbih al-Khawatir, v. 2, p. 108

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : الخَيرُ الّذي لا شَرَّ فيهِ: الشُّكرُ مَع النِّعمَةِ ، والصَّبرُ على‏ النّازِلَةِ . تحف العقول : 234 .

Imam al-Hasan (AS) said, 'Absolute goodness that is untainted with evil is being thankful for bounties and having patience in calamity.' Tuhaf al-Uqul, no. 234

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : ما فَتَحَ اللَّهُ عزّوجلّ على‏ أحدٍ بابَ مسألةٍ فَخَزنَ عَنهُ بابَ الإجابةِ . بحار الأنوار : 78 / 113 / 7 .

Imam al-Hasan (AS) said, 'Allah has never opened the door of request for anyone only to hold back the door of response.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 78, p. 113, no. 7

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : أنا الضَّامِنُ لِمَن لَم يَهجُسْ في قلبِهِ إلّا الرّضا أن يَدعُوَ اللَّهَ فَيُستَجابَ لَهُ . بحار الأنوار : 43 / 351 / 25 .

Imam al-Hasan (AS) said, 'I guarantee that the one who does not harbour anything but contentment in his heart will be answered when he supplicates to Allah.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 43, p. 351, no. 25

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : مَن قَرَأ القرآنَ كانَت لَهُ دعوةٌ مُجابةٌ إمّا مُعَجَّلَةً و إمّا مُؤَجَّلةً . بحار الأنوار : 93 / 313 / 17 .

Imam al-Hasan (AS) said, 'The one who recites the Qur'an has a supplication of his answered, be it immediately or later.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 93, p. 313, no. 17

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : مَنِ اتَّكَلَ على حُسنِ الاختِيارِ مِنَ اللَّهِ ، لَم يَتَمَنَّ أ نّهُ في غَيرِ الحالِ التي اختارَها اللَّهُ لَهُ . بحار الأنوار : 78 / 106 / 6 .

Imam al-Hasan (AS) said, 'He who trusts whatever Allah has chosen for him to be good, will never wish to be in any situation other than what Allah has chosen for him to be in.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 78, p. 106, no. 6

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : أنا الضّامِنُ لِمَن لا يَهجِسُ في قَلبِهِ إلّا الرِّضا أن يَدعُوَ اللَّهَ فَيُستَجابَ لَهُ . بحار الأنوار : 71 / 159 / 75 .

Imam al-Hasan (AS) said, 'I guarantee you that the one who entertains nothing save satisfaction with Allah in his heart, has only to ask Allah and He will answer him.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 71, p. 159, no. 75

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : ما نَقَصَتْ زكاةٌ مِن مالٍ قَطُّ . بحار الأنوار : 96 / 23 / 56 .

Imam al-Hasan (AS) said, 'The giving of the alms-tax never diminishes wealth.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 96, p. 23, no. 56

 الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام - لرجل جاءَ إلَيهِ يَستَشِيرُهُ في تَزويجِ ابنَتِهِ - : زَوِّجْها مِن رَجُلٍ تَقِيٍّ ، فإنّهُ إن أحَبَّها أكرَمَها وإن أبغَضَها لَم يَظلِمْها . مكارم الأخلاق : 1 / 446 / 1534 .

Imam al-Hasan (AS) said to man who came to ask his advice about getting his daughter married, 'Marry her to a pious man, for if he loves her he will honour her, and if he comes to dislike her, at least he will not be unjust towards her.' Makarim al-Akhlaq, v. 1, p. 446, no. 1534

 الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : إنّ المسألَةَ لا تَحِلُّ إلّا في إحدى‏ ثلاثٍ : دَمٍ مُفجِعٍ ، أو دَينٍ مُقرِحٍ ، أو فَقرٍ مُدقِعٍ . بحار الأنوار : 96 / 152 / 16 .

Imam al-Hasan (AS) said, 'Verily begging is not allowed, except in three cases: for paying a large sum of blood money, an escalating debt or an abasing poverty.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 96, p. 152, no. 16

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : الإعطاءُ قَبلَ السُّؤالِ مِن أكبَرِ السُّؤدُدِ . بحار الأنوار : 78 / 113 / 7 .

Imam al-Hasan (AS) said, 'The greatest characteristic of chiefdom is giving before one is asked.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 78, p. 113, no. 7

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام - وقد سُئلَ عنِ الشَّجاعةِ - : مُواقَفَةُ الأقرانِ ، والصَّبرُ عِندَ الطِّعانِ . بحار الأنوار : 78 / 104 / 2 .

Imam al-Hasan (AS) was once asked about courage, to which he replied, 'It is to know when to stand up to one's opponents, and when to be patient in the face of criticism and slander.' Tuhaf al-Uqul, no. 226 and Bihar al-Anwar, v. 78, p. 104, no. 2

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : اللُّؤمُ أن لا تَشكُرَ النِّعمَةَ . تحف العقول : 233 .

Imam al-Hasan (AS) said, ‘It is blameworthy that you do not thank for a favour done unto you.’ Tuhaf al-Uqul, no. 223

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام - في جَوابِ رَجُلٍ قالَ لَهُ : إنّي مِن شِيعَتِكُم - : يا عبدَ اللَّهِ ، إن كُنتَ لَنا في أوامِرِنا وزَواجِرِنا مُطِيعاً فقد صَدَقتَ ، وإن كُنتَ بخِلافِ ذلكَ فلا تَزِدْ في ذُنوبِكَ بدَعواكَ مَرتَبةً شَرِيفَةً لَستَ مِن أهلِها ، لا تَقُلْ : أنا مِن شِيعَتِكُم ، ولكن قُل : أنا مِن مُوالِيكُم ومُحِبِّيكُم ومُعادِي أعدائكُم ، وأنتَ في خَيرٍ وإلى‏ خَيرٍ . تنبيه الخواطر : 2 / 106 .

Imam al-Hasan (AS) said in answer to a man who said to him, ‘Verily I am one of your Shia’, ‘O Abdallah, if you are truly obedient to us in our commands and prohibitions, then you are telling the truth. But if not, then do not add to your sins by falsely claiming such a dignified position that you are not worthy of. Do not say, ‘I am one of your Shia’, but say rather, ‘I am one of your adherents and one of your lovers and an enemy to your enemies.’ You are good and aiming towards good.’ Tanbih al-Khawatir, v. 2, p. 106

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : قد أكثَرَ مِن الهَيبَةِ الصّامِتُ . بحار الأنوار : 78 / 113 / 7 .

Imam al-Hasan (AS) said, ‘Indeed the silent one has great earnestness.’ Bihar al-Anwar, v. 78, p. 113, no. 7

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام: المَصائبُ مَفاتيحُ الأجرِ . أعلام الدين : 297 .

Imam al-Hasan (AS) said, ‘Afflictions are the keys to reward.’ Alam al-Din, no. 297

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : صاحِبِ النّاسَ مِثلَ ما تُحِبُّ أن يُصاحِبوكَ بِهِ . أعلام الدين : 297 .

Imam al-Hasan (AS) said, ‘Associate with people the way you would like them to associate with you.’ Alam al-Din, p. 297

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : بِالعَقلِ تُدرَكُ الدّارانِ جَميعاً ، ومَن حُرِمَ مِنَ العَقلِ‏ (1) حُرِمَهُما جَميعاً . كشف الغمّة : 2 / 197 . (1) كذا في المصدر و الظاهر أنّ الصحيح : «حُرِمَ العقلَ» .

Imam al-Hasan (AS) said, ‘Both the abodes [of the world and the Hereafter] are grasped by the intellect, and whoever is deprived of the intellect is deprived of them both.’ Kashf al-Ghamma, v. 3, p. 197

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام - لَمّا سُئلَ عَنِ العَقلِ - : التَّجَرُّعُ لِلغُصَّةِ حَتّى‏ تَنالَ الفُرصَةَ . معاني الأخبار : 240 / 1 .

Imam al-Hasan (AS) when asked about the intellect, said, ‘To suppress one’s annoyance until the opportunity arises.’ Maani al-Akhbar, p. 240, no. 1

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : العاداتُ قاهِراتٌ ، فَمَنِ اعتادَ شَيئاً في سِرِّهِ وخَلَواتِهِ، فَضَحَهُ في عَلانِيَتِهِ وعِندَ المَلَأِ. تنبيه الخواطر : 2 / 113 .

 Imam al-Hasan (AS) said, ‘Habits are overpowering, for he who forms a habit to something in secret and during his free times is plagued by them in public and when occupied.’ Tanbih al-Khawatir, v. 2, p. 113

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام: الغَفلَةُ تَركُكَ المَسجِدَ، وطاعَتُكَ المُفسِدَ . بحار الأنوار : 78 / 115 / 10 .

Imam al-Hasan (AS) said, ‘Negligence is [manifest] in your abandonment of the mosque and in your obedience of the corrupt.’ Bihar al-Anwar, v. 78, p. 115, no. 10

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : إنّ اللَّهَ عَزَّوجلَّ بِمَنِّهِ ورَحمَتِهِ لَمّا فَرَضَ عَليكُمُ الفَرائضَ لم يَفرِضْ علَيكُم لِحاجَةٍ مِنهُ إلَيهِ ، بَل رَحمَةً مِنهُ إلَيكُم (علَيكُم) لا إلهَ إلّا هُو ، لِيَميزَ الخَبيثَ مِن الطَّيِّبِ ، ولِيَبتَلِيَ ما في صُدورِكُم ، ولِيُمَحِّصَ ما في قُلوبِكُم . بحار الأنوار : 23 / 99 / 3 .

Imam Hasan (AS) said, 'When Allah with His Generosity and Benevolence made the obligations a duty upon you, He did not do so for a need He has for them. Rather, it is as a result of the Benevolence He has over you - there is no god but He - and in order to distinguish between the bad and the good, and to test what is in your chests, and to purify what is in your hearts.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 23, p. 99, no. 3

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام - لمّا سُئلَ عنِ الفَقرِ - : شَرَهُ النفسِ إلى‏ كُلِّ شي‏ءٍ . تحف العقول : 225 .

Imam Hasan (AS), when asked about poverty, said, 'It is the greed of the self for everything.' Tuhaf al-Uqul, no. 225

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : التفكُّرُ حَياةُ قَلبِ البَصيرِ . بحار الأنوار : 78 / 115 / 11 .

Imam Hasan (AS) said, 'Thinking is the life of the heart of the cognizant.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 78, p. 115, no. 11

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : أسلَمُ القُلوبِ ما طَهُرَ مِن الشُّبُهاتِ . تحف العقول : 235 .

Imam Hasan (AS) said, 'The soundest of hearts is the heart that is pure of obscure matters.' Tuhaf al-Uqul, p. 235

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : اعلمْ أنَّ مُروَّةَ القَناعَةِ والرِّضا أكثرُ مِن مُرُوّةِ الإعطاءِ . بحار الأنوار : 78 / 111 / 6 .

Imam Hasan (AS) said, 'Know that the valour in contentment and satisfaction is greater than the valour in giving.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 78, p. 111, no. 6

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : لا يَنبغي لِمَن عَرَفَ عَظَمَةَ اللَّهِ أن يَتَعاظَمَ ، فإنّ رِفعَةَ الذينَ يَعلَمونَ عَظَمَةَ اللَّهِ أن يَتَواضَعُوا ، و (عِزَّ) الذينَ يَعرِفُونَ ما جَلالُ اللَّهِ أن يَتَذَلَّلُوا (لَهُ) . بحار الأنوار : 78 / 104 / 3 .

Imam Hasan (AS) said, 'It is not appropriate for he who knows the magnitude of Allah to be haughty, for the glory of those who know the magnitude of Allah is that they become humble, and the honour of those who know the Majesty of Allah is that they humiliate themselves to Him.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 78, p. 104, no. 3

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : أمّا الكَرَمُ فالتَّبرُّعُ بالمَعروفِ والإعطاءُ قَبلَ السُّؤالِ . بحار الأنوار : 44 / 89 / 2 .

Imam Hasan (AS) said, 'As for generosity, it entails undertaking acts of common courtesy and giving before being asked.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 44, p. 89, no. 2

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : مَن عَدَّدَ نِعَمَهُ مَحَقَ كَرَمَهُ . بحار الأنوار : 78 / 113 / 7 .

Imam Hasan (AS) said, 'He who counts his favours [to others] destroys his own generosity.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 78, p. 113, no. 7

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : المؤمنُ لا يَلهو حتّى‏ يَغفُلَ ، فإذا تَفَكّرَ حَزِنَ . تنبيه الخواطر : 1 / 52 .

Imam Hasan (AS) said, 'A believer does not occupy himself with amusement lest he becomes negligent, and when he thinks he becomes sad.' Tanbih al-Khawatir, v. 1, p. 52

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام - لَمّا سُئلَ عَنِ المُروءَةِ - : حِفظُ الدِّينِ ، وإعزازُ النّفسِ ، ولِينُ الكَنَفِ ، وتَعَهُّدُ الصَّنيعَةِ ، وأداءُ الحُقوقِ ، والتَّحَبُّبُ إلَى النّاسِ . تحف العقول : 225 .

Imam Hasan (AS), when asked about gallantry, said, '[It is] Protecting the religion, dignifying the self, lowering one's wing [in humility], dedication in one's actions, fulfilling rights, and showing love to people.' Tuhaf al-Uqul, p. 225

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام - أيضاً - : لِأنّكُم أخرَبتُم آخِرَتَكُم ، وعَمّرتُم دُنياكُم ، وأنتُم تَكرَهونَ النُّقلَةَ مِن العُمرانِ إلَى الخَرابِ . (1) معاني الأخبار : 390 / 29 .

Imam al-Hasan (AS), in answer to a person about the reason for hating death, said, 'Because you have wrecked your Hereafter and built your world, and you hate to move from a constructed place to a demolished place.' Maani al-Akhbar, p. 390, no. 29

الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام: تُجهَلُ النِّعَمُ ما أقامَت ، فإذا وَلَّت عُرِفَت . بحار الأنوار : 78 / 115 / 12 .

Imam Hasan (AS) said, 'Bounties are ignored as long as they exist, but when they go they [their worth] are known.' Bihar al-Anwar,  v. 78, p. 115, no. 12
