Launched in Arafah, Saudi Arabia as part of the start of the Hajj, the event was well received as millions of Muslims from all walks of life partook in the international effort.

In Malaysia, the World Quran Hour was held in many locations, including Sri Pentas 2, Plaza Alam Sentral , Shah Alam, which was aired live on TV3.

The event began with religious speaker Ustaz Rozie Rejab leading the recitation of Surah (chapter) Al-Fatihah. Eleven participants then took to the stage, in turn, to recite their selected verses of the Quran, ranging from chapters Yassin, Al-Mulk, Al-Mukminun, Maryam, and others.

Hosted by Ally Iskandar Mohd Mardzi, the campaign’s objective was to unite the ummah (Muslim community) and encourage Muslims to read the Holy Quran and incorporate the practice in their daily routines.

TV3 and TV9 Brand Management and Programming group general manager Sherina Nordin said the World Quran Hour was held in conjunction with Hajj pilgrims gathering at the Plain of Arafah on the 9th day of Zulhijjah today.

“This campaign was intended to encourage 10 million Muslims worldwide to simultaneously recite the Quran for an hour according to their time zones,” she said in a statement. Among public figures who participated in the live programme were Olympic bronze medalist Azizulhasni Awang, local comedian Achey, religious speaker Dr Harlina Halizah Siraj and actor Datuk Rosyam Nor.

Rosyam said the goal of the initiative was to motivate Muslims around the world to take some time off their schedules to recite and understand the Quran. "We have a ten-year plan for this event to be held annually," he said.
