International Meeting of Quran Calligraphers Begins in Dubai

The 7th edition of the international meeting of Quran calligraphers started on Saturday, July 11, in Dubai.

According to Al-Bayan newspaper, the program will continue for three days during which a copy of the Holy Quran will be calligraphed by the participants.

The gathering opened with the participation of Sheikh Nahyan ibn Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE’s Minister of Culture, the Youth and Social Development, as well as a number of cultural figures of the country.

It aims to help in developing Arabic language and art, introducing beauties of Arabic calligraphy and Islamic illumination as the most important signs of Arabic and Islamic civilization.

30 calligraphers of the Quran from 11 countries including Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Algeria, Yemen, Denmark, Syria and the UAE are present in the gathering to inscribe a Juz (part) of the Quran each.

The difference between this copy of the Holy Quran and those written in the previous editions of the program is that it will be inscribed not only in Naskh script but in Muhaqqiq and Thulth.

The copy will be unveiled on the night of the 27th of the holy month of Ramadan (July 13).

Muhammad Uzjay from Turkey, Abdul Reza Bahiya Davoud Al-Farjawi from Iraq and Ms Ubayda Muhammad Salih Al-Bunaki from Syria are members of this edition’s judging board who will select top calligraphers.

The ministry also plans to hold an art exhibition on the sidelines of the gathering where rare Islamic calligraphy and illumination works by eminent artists will be put on display.
