Ukrainian Translation of Quran Unveiled in Kiev

The first translation of the entire Holy Quran in Ukrainian was unveiled in a ceremony held in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev.

Mikhail Yakobevich, the translator, said it is the first time the entire Holy Book of Islam has been translated into Ukrainian directly from the original Arabic.

Yakobevich added that all the previous renderings, which were partial translations, were done from Russian and that is why they have failed to convey the meanings and concepts properly.

He noted that he studied about Islamic terms in order to choose the best equivalents for the terms on his translation.

Ukraine’s Muslims have welcomed the new translation, saying it will help them better understand the teachings of their holy book.

Osnova Publications has published the rendering.

Dana Pavekcheko, director of the publications, had previously said Ukraine is a multi-cultural society and reading the Quran will help people of the country better understand one another.

Ukrainian is an East Slavic language. It is the official state language of Ukraine and first of two principal languages of Ukrainians.

According to official estimates, 500,000 Muslims live in Ukraine but some say the number is over 1.5 million.
