Reliability of al-Sahifah al-Sajjadiyyah

Ahmad Gholamali

Sahifah al-Sajjadiyyah is the famous hadith legacy of the Ahlul Bayt.

Some hadith scholars have regarded its document as mutawatir. Meanwhile, there are few citations in the fiqhi (jurisprudential) books of the al-Sahifah al-Sajjadiyyah under homolateral issues. The main issue is that how the claim for al-Sahifah al-Sajjadiyyah’s tawatur was brought about. The truth is that the claims for al-Sahifah al-Sajjadiyyah’s tawatur are not consistent with the standards of rijal science. But the gathering of evidence, particularly through the tariq and fihrist look at the book, suggests the reliance on the issuance of al-Sahifah al-Sajjadiyyah that is called al-Sahifah al-Kamilah al-Sajjadiyyah. The author of the present paper considers the rijal evaluation for reliance on written heritage as ineffective. By providing some evidences, he demonstrates the customary reliance on this book. Findings of this research study indicate that mentioning the narrators and chain of transmissions through the legacy of famous books is merely for receiving blessing and consecration. They also show that this book has been obtained through a musnad way. Existence of some unknown narrator in the chain of transmission does not inflict any loss on the written legacy. However, some evidences such as different documents, five ply hadiths concerning al-Sahifah, and Zeidi’s chain of transmission somehow offset the weakness of the evidence for al-Sahifah al-Sajjadiyyah.

Key Words:  Reliability of al-Sahifah al-Sajjadiyyah, Traditions of al-Sahifah al-Sajjadiyyah, Fihrist Evaluation, Rijal Evaluation.

Why Afzal al-Amal Intizar al-Faraj not Found in the Sunnis’ Mahdaviyyat Discourse

Yunes Deghani Faresani

Sayyed Kazem Tabatabaee

Mahdi Jalali

Afzal al-Amal Intizar al-Faraj is a hadith which is mostly used in Shia school of thought under the title of the Promised Mahdi, peace be upon him. The question dealt with in the present paper is that why this hadith is not found in Sunni literature of Mahdaviyyat while it is found in numerous Sunni hadith collections and the majority of their intellectual groups believe in it. The authors of the present paper have attempted to identify three factors in construction of the interpretive discourse of this hadith among Sunnis:  A) Reasons for Issuance, B) Traditions which guarantee the main structure of the hadith, C) Their applications in the Sunni hadith literature. Then we have shown that these factors have shaped the understanding (reading) of the hadith in a way that is different from that of the Shia. Thus, no link has been established between this hadith and the Sunni Mahdaviyyat discourse.

Writing on Fabricated Hadiths among Shia: Description and Analysis

Mahdi Mehrizi

Sayyed Mohammad Reza Hosseini

The authors of the present paper first try to present an account of Shiite scholars and writers in the field of hadith fabrication and then describe and analyze them. On this basis, this paper introduces and describes fifteen works on hadith fabrication. To analyze them, the author tries to answer two questions in this regard. First question is that how these works are classified and who has compiled them? To answer this question, the author of the present paper has divided these books into three groups. He concludes that most of the works have been compiled by those who are of little acceptance among the traditional Shia community. Second question is that why works compiled by Shia scholars are less and in later time than Sunni’s. In response, the author comes up with five factors: refinement of Shia traditions, lack of inter-religious conflicts, not including the weak traditions on fabricated hadith, the cultural self-censorship and little population of the Shia.

A Critical Analysis of Etan Kohlberg’s View on Shia Dissimulation Based on Shia Theology and Hadith

Majid Maaref

Sayyed Sajjad Tabatabaeenezhad

Yahya Mirhosseini

Etan Kohlberg is one of the most outstanding contemporary Orientalists studying Shiism. In his article entitled "Some Imami Shia Views on the Issue of Dissimulation”, he has described Imami approach to the concept of dissimulation using historical and hadith approach. His topics include a variety of theological historical and hadith issues in this field. The effects of dissimulation teachings on the Shia Hadith and delineation the border between Usuli and Akhbari scholars are two of these topics. In a self-made analysis, he has considered the forbiddance of using dissimulation in some ritual prayers as a result of the Imams’ sense of distinction. The authors of the present paper first analyze the opponents’ criticism of the Imami Shia tenets, then Kohlberg’s views and claims are judged through a theological and hadith approach, in a way that is proven, Unlike the author's view, there is no conflict in Imami Shia approach to the principle of dissimulation. Adherence or non-adherence to it just varied in the different conditions. In the end, the authors prove that traditions associated with the dissimulation have nothing to do with sectarian distinctions; rather they were subject to advantages and disadvantages that authors were unaware of them.

Key Words:  Fiqh al-Hadith (Hadith Scholarship), Twelver Shia, Imami traditions, Dissimulation, Etan Kohlberg.
