1777 - آدابُ النَّومِ‏

1777. THE ETIQUETTES OF SLEEPING

1 - النَّظافةُ :

1. CLEANLINESS

6291.رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : لا يَبيتَنَّ أحَدُكُم ويَدُهُ غَمرَةٌ ، فإن فَعَلَ فأصابَهُ لَمَمٌ لِلشَّيطانِ فلا يَلُومَنَّ إلّا نَفسَهُ .1

6291.The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'None of you should go to sleep with unclean hands, for if he does and is stricken with mental derangement from Satan [as a result] then he has only himself to blame.' 2

2 - الطَّهارةُ :

2. Purity

6292.رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : مَن نامَ علَى الوُضوءِ إن أدرَكَهُ المَوتُ في لَيلِهِ فهُو عِندَ اللَّهِ شَهيدٌ .3

6292.The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Whoever sleeps with ablution [wudu?] and dies in his sleep is regarded by Allah as a martyr.' 4

6293.الإمامُ الصّادقُ عليه السلام : مَن تَطَهَّرَ ثُمّ أوى‏ إلى‏ فِراشِهِ باتَ وفِراشُهُ كمَسجِدِهِ .5

6293.Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, 'Whoever purifies himself [ablution] and then goes to his bed, he will sleep and his bed will be like his mosque.' 6

6294.الإمامُ الصّادقُ عليه السلام : مَن تَطَهَّرَ ثُمّ أوى‏ إلى‏ فِراشِهِ ، باتَ وفِراشُهُ كمَسجِدِهِ ، فإن ذَكرَ أ نّهُ على‏ غَيرِ وُضوءٍ فلْيَتَيمَّمْ مِن دِثارِهِ كائناً ما كانَ ، فإن فَعَلَ ذلكَ لَم يَزَلْ في الصَّلاةِ وذِكرِ اللَّهِ عَزَّوجلَّ .7

6294.Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, 'Whoever purifies himself [ablution] and then goes to his bed he will sleep and his bed will be like his mosque. So, if he remembers that he is not in a state of ablution, then he should perform dry ablution (tayammum) on his clothes, whatever it may be, and if he does so he will be [regarded as] continuously praying and remembering Allah Almighty.' 8

3 - عَرضُ النَّفسِ علَى الخَلاءِ :

3. Relieving Oneself before Sleeping

6295.الإمامُ عليٍّ عليه السلام لابنه الحسن عليه السلام : يا بُنَيَّ ، ألا اُعَلِّمُكَ أربَعَ خِصالٍ تَستَغني بِها عَنِ الطِّبِّ ؟ فقالَ : بلى‏ يا أميرَ المؤمنينَ . قالَ : لا تَجلِسْ علَى الطَّعامِ إلّا وأنتَ جائعٌ ، ولا تَقُمْ عَنِ الطَّعامِ إلّا وأنتَ تَشتَهيهِ ، وجَوِّدِ المَضغَ ، وإذا نِمتَ فاعرِضْ نَفسَكَ علَى الخَلاءِ ، فإذا استَعمَلتَ هذا استَغنَيتَ عَنِ الطِّبِّ .9

6295. Imam Ali (AS), to his son al-Hasan (AS) said, 'O son, shall I teach you four things that will make you needless of medicine?' He said, 'Yes, O Commander of the Faithful.' He said, 'Do not eat food unless you are hungry and get up from eating whilst you still desire to eat more, chew well, and before you sleep go and relieve yourself. If you do these you will be needless of medicine.' 10

4 - المُحاسَبةُ :

4. TAKING ACCOUNT OF ONESELF

6296.الإمامُ الصّادقُ عليه السلام : إذا أوَيتَ إلى‏ فِراشِكَ فانظُرْ ما سَلَكتَ في بَطنِكَ وما كَسَبتَ في يَومِكَ ، واذكُرْ أ نَّكَ مَيِّتٌ وأنَّ لكَ مَعاداً .11

6296.Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, 'When you head for bed then look at what you have put in your stomach [during the day] and what you have earned in your day, and remember that you are to die and that you will be resurrected.' 12

5 - القِراءةُ والدُّعاءُ عِندَ النَّومِ :

5. RECITING [THE QUR'AN] AND SUPPLICATING AT BEDTIME

6297.رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله: مَن قَرَأَ (قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أحَدٌ) حِينَ يأخُذُ مَضجَعَهُ ، غَفَرَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وجَلَّ لَهُ ذُنوبَ خَمسينَ سَنَةً .13

6297.The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Whoever recites the chapter of the Qur'an entitled al-Ikhlas when he retires to his bed, Allah will forgive fifty years of his sins.' 14

6298.رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : مَن قَرأَ (ألْهاكُمُ التَّكاثُرُ) عِندَ مَنامِهِ وُقِيَ فِتنَةَ القَبرِ .15

6298.The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Whoever recites the chapter of the Qur'an entitled al-Takathur when going to sleep will be protected from the trials of the grave.' 16

6299.رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : إذا آوى‏ أحَدُكُم إلى‏ فِراشِهِ ... لِيَقُلْ : اللّهُمّ إن أمسَكتَ نَفسي في مَنامي فاغفِرْ لَها ، وإن أرسَلتَها فاحفَظْها بما تَحفَظُ بهِ عِبادَكَ الصّالِحينَ .17

6299.The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'When any of you retires to his bed ... he should say: O Allah, if You take my soul while I am sleeping then forgive it, and if You send it back to me, then protect it as You protect Your righteous servants.' 18

6 - النَّومُ علَى القَفا أو علَى اليَمينِ :

6. SLEEPING ON ONE'S BACK OR SIDE

6300.الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : النَّومُ على‏ أربَعَةِ أوجُهٍ : الأنبياءُ عليهم السلام تَنامُ على‏ أقفِيَتِهِم مُستَلقِينَ وأعيُنُهُم لا تَنامُ مُتَوَقِّعَةً لِوَحيِ اللَّهِ عَزَّوجلَّ ، والمُؤمنُ يَنامُ على‏ يَمينهِ مُستَقبِلَ القِبلَةِ ، والمُلوكُ وأبناؤها تَنامُ على‏ شَمائلها لِيَستَمرئوا ما يأكُلونَ ، وإبليسُ وإخوانُهُ وكُلُّ مَجنونٍ وذوعاهَةٍ يَنامُ على‏ وَجهِهِ مُنبَطِحاً .19

6300.Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Sleeping can be in four ways: prophets (AS) sleep straight on their backs and their eyes do not sleep waiting for the revelation of Allah. The believer sleeps on his right side facing the qibla. Kings and their children sleep on their left side enjoying what they ate. Satan, his brethren and every insane and deformed person sleeps flat on their front.' 20

7 - الدُّعاءُ عِندَ الانتِباهِ :

7. SUPPLICATION WHEN WAKING UP

6301.بحار الأنوار : إنَّ النَّبيَّ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله كانَ إذا آوى‏ إلى‏ فِراشِهِ قالَ : «باسمِكَ اللّهُمّ أمُوتُ وأحيا» ، وإذا استَيقَظَ قالَ : «الحَمدُ للَّهِ الّذي أحيانا بَعدَما أماتَنا وإلَيهِ النُّشورُ» .21

6301. Hudhayfa said, 'When the Prophet (SAWA) retired to his bed he would say, 'In Your name O Allah I die and live', and when he woke up he would say, 'Praise be to Allah who revived us after He caused us to die, and upon Him is the Resurrection.' 22
